About us

35 Years of Unconditional Love and Hope

Our History

Since 1990, the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) has been dedicated to saving and transforming lives. Rooted in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, we serve communities throughout the Valley of 1000 Hills — areas deeply impacted by HIV and AIDS, poverty, and inequality.

What began as a small outreach project offering counselling and home-based care has grown into one of the province’s most trusted and impactful non-profit organisations. Today, HACT reaches more than 10,000 people every year, offering a holistic network of care that supports individuals, families, and entire communities.

We believe that hope is the most powerful medicine, and that every person deserves dignity, compassion, and the opportunity to thrive.

Our Heart

Our strength lies in it’s people! From our compassionate staff and dedicated volunteers to our creative artisans who make our work possible.

Our Vision

We strive toward a future where communities are healthy and fully empowered, resulting in a world that is completely HIV and AIDS-free.

Our Mission

To provide unconditional love and hope to all those impacted by HIV and AIDS through practical care, education, and economic empowerment.

We believe that lasting change starts with unconditional love and hope, and grows through community.

Our Values

Passion

To serve with passion, energy and commitment, always acknowledging the
privilege it is to be helping others.

Integrity

The message and the messenger must be the same, we must practice
what we preach and be honest in all things.

Empowerment

Helping people to take ownership over their lives.

Faith

Seeking to do as Jesus would do: “A new command I give you:
Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” NIV John 13: 34-35.

‘Ubuntu’

‘I am because you are’ – being community driven and constantly aware that our actions impact on those around us, and that the sum is always better than the parts.

Our Approach

HACT’s model is built on a holistic, rights-based, and asset-driven approach, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our programmes are integrated across three key pillars; Health, Empowerment, and Education, allowing us to respond to the overlapping challenges of chronic illness,
unemployment, and inequality.

This integrated structure ensures that every person we reach is supported not only medically, but emotionally, socially, and economically. From the bedside of our Othandweni Hospice and Palliative Care Unit to the classrooms of our Digital Learning Lab.

HACT works to build resilience, restore dignity, and create long-term change.

Our Impact

Every number tells a story of a life restored, a child given hope, a family lifted from despair.
